Villa Mauresque

High above Corossol, Villa Mauresque overlooks the bay and the harbour of Gustavia, where the comings and goings of yachts can be followed until sunset. Designed by François Pécard in a purely local style, it rises over four levels of independent pavilions linked by outdoor staircases, every room enjoying the view. The air-conditioned living room takes on the air of a Moroccan palace, with octagonal wood-and-glass tables and embroidered rugs; next to it, a square wrought-iron table seats eight beside a kitchen with oriental touches. Outside, the heated pool, with a submerged alcove, faces the panorama amid the greenery; at night, delicate lighting picks out the steps and the terrace. The four bedrooms, each in its own pavilion with a bathroom, sleep eight; three have four-poster beds. A spellbinding house, a few minutes from Gustavia.
